Winter 2025 Class Registration is Closed

Our next registration for regular classes will be for the Spring 2025 session and appointments will be available in mid-October 2025. Sign up to receive email alerts as the Winter dates approach.  You can also learn about our Learning Circles here.

Enrollment Process

Step one: Schedule an intake appointment

All students must schedule an intake appointment to come in-person to complete registration. Family members or friends planning to register together, must schedule an appointment for each individual registering for classes.

Step two: Come to your in-person intake appointment and fill out a form

Our form asks your personal information (such as name, address, phone number, emergency contact, and family income). We keep your personal information confidential. Staff and volunteers will be able to assist you, if needed.

Step three: Take a speaking/listening test

All students regardless of level must complete testing to be enrolled. We offer eight levels of English and we want to be sure that you are placed in a class with students who are closest to your level. The speaking test is a short, informal interview. There are ten questions and while we encourage you to respond in complete sentences if you are able, we understand that many students are not. Do the best you can and try not to be nervous!

Step four: Take a reading test

Take a multiple choice reading test. This is a timed test and takes 1 hour to complete.

Step five: Enroll in REMIND message system

We send class information and announcements via a message system called Remind. You will be enrolled in the system to receive text messages, but if you prefer, you can download the app and change your preferences to receive emails or push notifications. You can also update your preferences to receive messages in your language in Remind.

Step Six: Placement and Payment

Receive your class placement information, based on your reading and speaking tests and your preference for class location. Complete payment for the class session and receive your student information card.

Online students will receive their textbook and workbook during registration.

BEACON in-person students will receive their textbook and workbook on the first day of class.

What to bring to your intake appointment

Your phone

We send class information and announcements via a message system called Remind. In order to accept the invitation to receive our messages, you must respond by text. Please bring your phone to complete the process.

Patience

Please keep in mind that registration usually takes 1.5 hours – 2 hours. We recommend that you do not bring children with you to registration as it can be very crowded, it may slow the registration process, and children are not permitted in the testing areas.

Payment

Classes cost $80 for the 12-week course. Payment can be made by cash, credit card, or personal checks made out to BEACON. There are no refunds and no transfers. If you have an employer or social service provider paying for your class, you must bring a letter to registration.
